Funding sought to put cover over courts
Help! It’s raining and there’s no place to go!
That is the rainy day cry at Camp Howard and always has been for a camp located in a rain forest. While campers have no problem with sprinkles, downpours can be show stoppers at camp.
Most of the summer is generally clear, but the location generally gets one good week of rain each summer. When it rains, activities have to be modified.
The Christ Child Society funded construction of a basketball court in 2010. Included is a massive foundation on which a cover will one day be installed. The camp is gathering funds to install a steel cover, which will cost nearly $400,000. The area is large and will provide space campers can play games on rainy days. The engineering for the cover has already been paid for and the foundation installed.
In addition to the cover enhancing summer camping, it also will benefit Outdoor School campers who use the camp in fall and spring. A cover over the courts will protect campers from the sun and prolong the life of the courts themselves.
Officials are seeking benefactors to step forward.
The Christ Child Society disbanded in 2009.
