Maronite Catholics, many of whom have roots in Lebanon, marked the ordination and bishop’s visit with three days of gatherings at homes and at St. Sharbel Maronite Church in Southeast Portland. The culture’s vibrant hospitality was on display.

The Benedictine Sisters of Mount Angel are holding a gathering for those who want to inquire about becoming a monastery oblate. Benedictine oblates are laypeople 18 or older who become formally affiliated with the Sisters. Workers rights organization withdraws from grant consideration
Portland’s organization of day laborers has removed itself from consideration for a major grant from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. Voz chose to maintain close ties with the National Council of La Raza, a group that promotes same-sex marriage, in contradiction to Catholic teaching.

Portland to host Northwest's first Maronite ordination
The variety of Catholic tradition and the plight of Christians in the Middle East will be at the forefront this weekend in Portland. The leader of Maronite Catholics in the western U.S. is visiting to ordain a Portland monk on the path to priesthood. Bishop Elias Zaidan of the St. Louis-based Maronite Eparchy of Our Lady of Lebanon will ordain Monk Anthony Joseph Alles as a transitional deacon during the Holy Mysteries — or Mass — starting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, July 20, at St. Sharbel Church in Southeast Portland.

Father Carl Flach, a long time pastor in the Archdiocese of Portland, died Saturday, June 21. He was 81. The funeral Mass for Father Flach will be held at St. Mary Cathedral in Portland on Friday, June 27 at 9:30 a.m.

But that doesn’t mean graduates simply can rely on getting a degree. Experts and graduates say getting a good job means meeting people, attending events and asking questions of workers in your field. The Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women met at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Portland May 12. Joan Towner, president, opened the meeting and, after initial reports, proceeded to the election of officers. She then presented the new leaders to the members: Virginia Durrin of St. Therese Parish in Portland, president; Marci Marlow of St. Henry Parish in Gresham, vice president; Carolyn Dinsmore of Holy Redeemer Parish in Portland, treasurer. The post of secretary is still to be announced.

Archbishop Alexander Sample will consecrate the Archdiocese of Portland to Mary under the title “Immaculate Heart of Our Lady of Fatima” during a Mass set to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 28, at St. Mary Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. On the church calendar, the day marks the Memorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A rosary will precede Mass at 1:30 p.m.

Shawl makers create tangible prayer for those who suffer
A Mount Angel man died recently of pancreatic cancer. The manly fellow — retired military — in his last days told Benedictine Father Philip Waibel that one of the things getting him through the suffering was a blanket. It was a soft prayer shawl that had been knitted by a group of parishioners expressly to comfort those who are ill or dying.

Son of immigrants from Mexico, Bañuelos served this spring as translator for an Oregon doctor in the poverty-stricken Central American nation. Guatemalans walked miles overnight to be seen, even when suffering from hernias, cataracts, gall bladder disease and other infections.
