“The death penalty’s continued existence in the U.S. is inextricably tied to mistaken notions that God demands it,” Dale Recinella says. He calls those notions “flawed applications of Divine Revelation” similar to past justifications for slavery.

Springfield shoppers show generosity
SPRINGFIELD — During their annual “Independence from Hunger Campaign,” the Springfield Grocery Outlet collected more than $5,000 worth of groceries and more than $2,000 in cash that was given to Catholic Community Services’ Springfield Community Service Center. The store was sixth in the nation for results among the national chain of Grocery Outlets, which are independently owned.

L'Arche benefit raises $67,000
L’Arche Portland hosted a benefit Oct. 17 at the University of Portland. More than 230 people helped raise more than $67,000 for the organization, which aims to create home and build community among people with and without intellectual disabilities.

WASHINGTON (CNS) -- Catholic leaders around the world condemned terrorist attacks in Paris and Beirut, offering prayers and condolences.

"There is no place for terrorism in a civilized society," Archbishop Socrates Villegas, president of the Philippine bishops' conference, said Nov. 15. "Causing the death of anyone is a sin against God and a crime against humanity."

Martha and Mary Ministries staff hopes to reopen
The article in the Oct. 2 issue of the Catholic Sentinel about Martha and Mary’s Ministry closing the Dieringer home, the heart of their ministry to the dying, sparked a brushfire of concern over Portland losing the only hospice facility of its kind. The Dieringer home, donated to Martha and Mary Ministries by the Dieringer family, gave a serene and Catholic place to die for those people who were unable to spend their last days in their own homes, which is how hospice care usually works.

High Hoops for the upcoming CYO basketball season
CYO’s largest sports program is basketball. Operating during the winter, it is open to first through 12th graders. For the first time this winter, we are also offering Hot Shots basketball, traditionally a fall sport.  Hot Shots is our only co-ed division for boys and girls in first and second grades. The combination makes it easier for CYO Clubs to put together teams.

Providence Health Plan names new CEO
Providence Health Plan has named Mike Cotton as its chief executive officer. Cotton comes to Providence from Humana Inc., where he served as vice president and chief operating officer for Humana’s dual eligible and Medicaid programs and was responsible for the management and operations of the company’s Medicaid and state-based contract programs. Cotton will step into his new role in October.

Champion of vulnerable appointed a judge
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown has appointed Patrick Henry, a 53-year-old member of St. Andrew Parish in Northeast Portland, as a judge for the Multnomah County Circuit Court. Henry will be sworn in Oct. 16, becoming one of 38 judges serving in Multnomah County and one of 10 presiding in family and juvenile court.

Saint's relics to visit Portland

Maronite Bishop Abdallah Elias Zaidan, together with Archbishop Alexander Sample, will celebrate the Pontifical Maronite Divine Liturgy at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, at Saint Sharbel Church in Portland. Concelebrants will be Father Christopher Fabre, pastor of Saint Sharbel’s, Father Jonathan Decker, prior of Sacred Heart Monastery; and Father Anthony Alles, sub-prior.

The special liturgy follows the 8:30 a.m. arrival and enthronement of the relics of Saint Sharbel Mahklouf at the parish.

Jason Kidd wants the Archdiocese of Portland family life internet site to be a place where families can share stories of men and women “stepping out in faith,” responding to God’s call to love and serve marriages, families and neighborhoods. He hopes the site will help some people step out of their comfort zones.

Holy Redeemer Church in Portland will host a special vespers, on Sunday, Nov. 15 at 4 p.m. in the Romanesque church. Vespers is the ancient liturgy of evening prayer and includes reading of scripture, singing of psalms and other songs.

Executive Director Steve Franey and other staff still have hope that they’ll find the funding and business model that will allow the ministry at the Dieringer home to continue. “The outcry has made us hopeful that we can restart our residential care,” he says.

Longtime pastor, youth recreation chief dies
Msgr. Carl Gimpl, longtime pastor and former head of youth recreation in the Archdiocese of Portland, died Sunday, Oct. 25. He was 87. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, at St Mary’s Cathedral in Portland.

Life Chain planned for Oct. 25

The Knights of Columbus are inviting other Catholics to join this year’s Life Chain, a prayerful gathering of pro-life advocates at Planned Parenthood in Northeast Portland, where many of the region’s abortions are performed. Protesters also object to Planned Parenthood curriculum, which they say fails to discourage early sexual activity.

Bartko was impressed at the generosity and community spirit in his neighborhood, but aghast at the “stark inequities.” It is clear to him that the most obvious problem in Portland is housing; too few Portlanders can afford it.
