The Archdiocese of Portland Office of Office of Life, Justice and Peace is asking Catholics to urge the state's federal lawmakers to support a farm bill that feeds hungry people, promotes stewardship of creation, fosters small family farmers, and helps rural communities thrive.

After nine years, program director retires
Marylee King, who directed programs at the Macdonald Center in Portland's Old Town, has retired. After 25 years as a college administrator, she began volunteering by visiting low-income residents of Old Town and helping break isolation in a neighborhood where many homeless people live.

SSMO Sister honored by Portland Community College
In 1952, she entered the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon where she undertook training to become a nurse. Upon graduating from St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash. and taking state boards, she received her license as a practical nurse in July of 1962. The following year she was part of the staff to open Maryville Nursing Home, which celebrateD its 50th anniversary June 4.

Music has been choir director's lifelong ministry
“I just can’t stop singing." That’s how Ray Lynch describes his motivation to serve as a choir director at St. Charles Parish for 61 years. This year, at 87, Lynch finally retires from the music ministry, but anyone who has performed with Lynch know the man’s interest in music won’t slow down anytime soon.

Oregon tech pioneer honored
The University of Portland took part in honoring a pioneer of Oregon's high-tech industry. Last month marked what would have been the 100th birthday of Howard Vollum, a Catholic who in 1946 co-founded Tektronix, which designed, manufactured, and marketed laboratory oscilloscopes. Tektronix helped lead a tech explosion in Oregon, where the business is still expanding. The industry came to be known as the Silicon Forest.

New cancer treatment being tested at Providence
People with certain kinds of blood and lymph cancers can participate in groundbreaking research at Providence Cancer Center in Portland. The center, which focus in part on immunotherapy, is the first site in the nation to test a new non-chemotherapy treatment for patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma or chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

World Youth Day pilgrims getting set
A small but excited group of young Oregon Catholics is preparing to attend World Youth Day next month in Rio de Janeiro. A dozen people will make the trek from the Archdiocese of Portland July 19-29 to celebrate the faith and gather with Pope Francis.

Oregon to take part in 'rosary relay' for priests
The Annual Global Rosary Relay for Priests is on the Feast of The Sacred Heart, Friday June 7, across the globe. It's a time set aside for the church to pray for priests and ask Mary to protect them. KBVM, 88.3 FM, will broadcast a rosary at 11 a.m. that day. In addition, the Grotto in Portland will have a rosary at 11:30 a.m. that day.

Death penalty criticized
SALEM — A man convicted of aggravated murder shared the stage this month with a former superintendent of Oregon’s maximum security prison, a former director of the Department of Corrections, an award-winning journalist and a former Oregon Supreme Court Chief Justice. The event, sponsored by Oregonians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty, drew an overflow crowd at Willamette University’s Putnam Center.

Iconography institute runs June 21-29
MOUNT ANGEL — They mix pigment with an emulsion of egg yolk, water and vinegar, exactly as it was done in the fifth through 13th centuries. Following an ancient canon, they draw according to traditional geometric patterns, and then add the gold leaf and paint in color combinations established millennia ago by the world’s greatest iconographers.

Archbishop Alexander Sample has appointed Father Peter Smith as Vicar General and Moderator of the Curia. Father Smith will succeed Msgr. Dennis O'Donovan, who is retiring at the end of June.


Jesuits speak out on comprehensive immigration reform
In letters to President Obama and Congress, the nine regional leaders of the Society of Jesus in the United States are calling for comprehensive and humane immigration reform. One of the signers is Father Pat Lee, provincial of the Portland-based Oregon Province of Jesuits.

Pilgrimage church in Eugene has a long history
EUGENE — St. Mary Church here did not just initiate new Catholics at the Easter vigil and let that be that. The parish held a welcome reception later and gave new members a gift and a round of applause. One of the several ways to grow in faith and gain a Year of Faith plenary indulgence — pardon of temporal punishment for sin — is to visit a holy pilgrimage site designated by the local bishop.

Abortion funding ban sought
Pro-life activists in Oregon are collecting signatures for a 2014 ballot initiative to stop taxpayer funding of abortion. The Corvallis-based petition committee early in May mailed 10,000 petition sheets to volunteers and other supporters across the state.

Marist bids farewell to joyful chaplain
EUGENE — At a recent Marist High School Mass, a student called Father David Cullings "a million laughs and unending inspiration." The jubilant 71-year-old priest is about to retire after 20 years as a math teacher, chaplain and beloved mentor at the 525-student school. He's known for deep faith, clever remarks, wise counsel and picking up garbage in the parking lot.
