Anti-poverty grants celebrated

It was a day to celebrate the good achieved by donations from Catholics. The Archdiocese of Portland last week convened representatives from two local anti-poverty organizations that have received national grants from the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. The collection is taken up around the nation just before Thanksgiving.

Transitional deacons set for ordination

Two men studying for the priesthood will be ordained transitional deacons. Matthew Libra will be ordained at St. Edward Parish in Lebanon by Archbishop John Vlazny on Sept. 11. The Mass of Ordination will begin at 11 a.m.  Jeff Eirvin will be ordained on Oct. 7 at St. Peter Basilica in the Vatican.

Pro-life advocates occupy a corner near Planned Parenthood in Southeast Portland
About 50 pro-life volunteers gathered at St. Stephen Church in Southeast Portland on a hot July day for Mass. The group then processed to a nearby Planned Parenthood site to pray all of the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary.

Catholic Charities dedicates new center
Supporters, staff, and friends of Catholic Charities gathered last week for the dedication of the organization’s new Clark Family Center. Archbishop John Vlazny blessed the center after an hour-long ceremony on the fourth floor of the new 60,000 square foot building on the corner of Southeast 27th Avenue and Powell Boulevard.

The Archdiocese of Portland Office of Justice and Peace/Respect for Life is offering ways for parishes to educate listeners on the themes of church social teaching. The office sent out an e-mail to parishes suggesting one-sentence social principle prefaces to prayers and bulletin announcements.

Jesuits announce new director of vocations
Father Jack Bentz is the new director of vocations for the Oregon Province of Jesuits, comprised of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana. Father Bentz replaces Father Steve Lantry, who, after serving in the role for 12 years, is returning to full-time pastoral work in Tacoma.

ASTORIA — The Knights of Columbus from St. Mary Star of the Sea Parish here won a national award this month for aid and outreach to youth. The recognition came during the national convention of the Knights of Columbus, an event attended by 2,000 Knights from nine countries.

Building centralizes Catholic Charities' services

Three years ago, the board of directors of Catholic Charities was at a crossroads. The 76-year-old organization needed a new home — to centralize its services and offer clients one location for their needs. Next week, Catholic Charities will dedicate its new building, the Clark Family Center.
