The Archdiocese of Portland plans to stay in talks with an all-girls school that now says it will welcome employees who enter same-sex unions recognized as marriages by civil authorities in Oregon.

More than 130 participants gathered for the 33rd Summer Conference July 29-Aug. 2 on the University of Portland campus. The annual event, a retreat for all ages, included activities for the young and not-so-young. It was a time of reflection and renewal, deepening of faith, and experience of the Church.

Salem foundation notes long timers
Some members of the board of directors of the Salem Catholic Schools Foundation have a long history with the organization. John Daczewitz was elected in 1984. Kevin Mannix and Jackie Carey were chosen in 1985. Jim Fahlstrom served from 1982 until 1983, then returned to the board in 1993 and has stayed ever since.

More than 350 hundred pro-life supporters rallied in front of the Planned Parenthood building in Beaverton on July 28. The rally was part of the “Women Betrayed” nationwide rallies organized by Students for Life for America calling for state governments and the federal government to investigate and defund Planned Parenthood.

Jesuit freshman brings library to homeless
Sofia Deatherage, 14, took her faith and applied it to earn a rare Silver Award from the Girl Scouts. Deatherage remodeled a living area and created a library at Tigard’s Good Neighbor Center earlier this year. Deatherage, who graduated from Valley Catholic Middle School this spring, earned a Girl Scout Silver Award for the project.

Providence Bridge Pedal's 20th annual ride

This year’s Providence Bridge Pedal on Sunday, Aug. 9, offers cyclists a way to “pedal their way into history” because it includes the first public crossing of Tilikum Crossing, “Bridge of the People,” the region’s new bridge over the Willamette River. The unique car-free bridge will then close until its Sept. 12 grand opening.

University of Portland has received a $100,000 gift from John Becic, who graduated in 1952 with a degree in accounting. With his gift, the university has established the John Becic Distinguished Professorship in Accounting within the Pamplin School of Business. A portion of his gift will provide support for recent and future upgrades of Joe Etzel Field and the university’s baseball program.

Msgr. Frank Campbell dies
Msgr. Frank Campbell, 89, died Sunday, July 26. A funeral Mass will be held at St Mary’s Cathedral in Portland at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 7. Msgr. Campbell had served as principal of Central Catholic; pastor of St. Mary Magdalene, St. Mary Cathedral, and St. Edward, North Plains; and chaplain to St. Mary of the Valley, Beaverton.

New Gallup poll shows pope's favorability drops among Americans
WASHINGTON — Is the honeymoon with Pope Francis over for Americans? A new Gallup poll shows that the favorability rating for the pontiff among U.S. respondents is now about 59 percent, down from 76 percent in early 2014 and close to the 58 percent rating Americans gave him when he was elected pope in March 2013.

There, CRS had built a water tower, a faucet in the village square and a hand-washing station that drained onto a garden where local mothers grew food for schoolchildren. WATCH: Helping defeat poverty
For 12 local non-profits who help with everything from ensuring low-income people have healthy food to assisting inmates during their transition from prison, the Catholic Campaign for Human Development last week held a dinner to recognize and award money to a dozen anti-poverty projects in western Oregon. The total of all grants, which comes from money collected in Catholic parishes, was $283,000. This includes local and national grants.
