Archdiocese announces priest reassignments, effective July 1
Archbishop John Vlazny has announced the clergy reassignments for the Archdiocese of Portland. They are as follows:
Father Michael Biewend, CJ: Pastor, St. Mary Magdalene, Portland Father Biewend was born in St. Joseph, Mo, in 1953. He attended college at St. Johnís Seminary College in Camarillo, Calif., graduating in 1976. He attended theology there as well, graduating in 1980. He also attended the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. He was ordained in 1980 for the Josephite Fathers in Santa Maria, Calif. He has served in California, Germany, South Carolina, Japan, Colorado, New Jersey, Texas, Hawaii, and Kansas, as a military chaplain. In Portland, he has served at St. Pius X Parish, Portland.
Father David Brown: Pastor, St. Mary, Our Lady of the Dunes, Florence, and St. John the Apostle, Reedsport Father Brown was born in Hebron, Neb., in 1958. He graduated from Sandy Union High School in 1976. He received a bachelorís degree in criminology from Southern Oregon University in 1984 and worked as an insurance investigator prior to entering Mount Angel Seminary in 2000. Father Brown has done ministry work at Queen of Peace Parish in Salem, St. Mary, Star of the Sea in Astoria, the Benedictine Nursing Center in Mount Angel, St. Mary Cathedral in Portland, St. Joseph the Worker in Portland and St. Anthony in Forest Grove. He studied at the Mexican American Cultural Center in San Antonio, Texas, and studied clinical pastoral education at Emmanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Neb. He was parochial vicar at St. Mary Cathedral in Portland for the last year.
Father Steve Geer: Pastor, Immaculate Conception Parish, Stayton Father Geer was born in Bethlehem, Pa. He graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1978 and earned a masterís degree in accounting from Portland State University in 1986. Raised a Presbyterian, he became Catholic in 1997 at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Lake Oswego. While studying at Mount Angel Seminary, he earned a master of arts in theology in 2005 and a master of divinity. He has done pastoral work at Mount St. Joseph Care Center in Portland, St. Patrick Parish in Canby, the Oregon State Hospital in Salem, St. Mary Parish in Corvallis, and Our Lady of the Lake. He was serving most recently as parochial vicar at St. Cecilia Parish in Beaverton.
Father Donald Gutmann: Pastor, St. Peter Parish, Newberg Father Gutmann graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1976. He studied nursery management at Portland State University and Oregon State University, graduating in 1980. He then worked at his familyís nursery for two years. Father Gutmannís seminary education began at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he studied for two years. He served as youth minister at St. Anthony Parish in Forest Grove for four years before entering Mount Angel Seminary in 1989. He served at St. Joseph Parish, Salem, Our Lady of the Lake, Lake Oswego, St. Mary, Corvallis and St. Mary, Our Lady of Dunes, Florence and St. John, Reedsport.
Father Peter OíBrien: Pastor, St. Monica Parish, Coos Bay Father OíBrien, 48, was born in Evanston, Ill. He grew up in Cheyenne, Wyo., and worked as an electric lineman. He earned college and post-graduate degrees from Mount Angel Seminary. Upon graduation, he received the St. Benedict Medal for exemplifying the highest formational ideals of the seminary. He served as deacon at St. Mary Parish in Albany before being ordained a priest and moving to St. Cecilia Parish in Beaverton. He was parochial vicar at St. Anne Parish, Grants Pass before his assignment in Coos Bay.
Father Angel Pťrez: Pastor, St. Luke Parish, Woodburn Father Pťrez was ordained in 2002 by Archbishop John Vlazny at St. Mary Cathedral in Portland. Born in Mexico, his ministerial training assignments have included work at Oregon State Hospital, St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Parish in Astoria; the Los Embajadores Program in Tijuana, Mexico; St. John the Apostle Parish in Oregon City; clinical pastoral experience at Sisters of Charity Hospital in Buffalo, N.Y.; and a pastoral internship at St. Anne Parish in Grants Pass. He served as parochial vicar at St. Mary Parish, Corvallis and was pastor at St. Monica in Coos Bay before his assignment in Woodburn.
Father Panneer Selvam: Pastor, St. Joseph Parish, Roseburg, and St. Francis Xavier Parish, Sutherlin Father Selvam was born in Dindigul Tn, India, in 1953. He graduated from Arulanandar College in 1977 and attended seminary at St. Paul, Trichy, India, and Sacred Heart Seminary in Poonamallee, Madra, India. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Hyderabad, India, in 1981. In Oregon, he has served at St. Joseph Parish, Salem, Our Lady of the Lake, Lake Oswego, and Immaculate Conception, Stayton.
Father Andrew Thomas: Pastor, Holy Trinity Parish, Bandon Father Thomas, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., attended college seminary. After teaching at Queen of Peace grade school in Salem for two years, he applied for acceptance as a candidate for the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Portland. He has served at Sacred Heart Parish, Medford, and most recently as parochial vicar at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Lake Oswego.
Father Gerard Tully, CSP: Pastor, St. Philip Neri Parish, Portland After graduating from Manhattan College in 1983, Father Tully entered the work force for awhile before joining the Paulists in 1988. He studied at Catholic University of America in 1989. In 1993, he finished his Master of Divinity degree. He was ordained in 1994 in New York City. His pastoral assignments have included stints in New York City, Arizona, Rome, and Texas.
Father David Zegar: Pastor, St. Peter Parish, Portland Father Zegar was born in Vancouver, Wash. and attended both Grant High School and Central Catholic High School. He attended both Oregon State University and graduated from Portland State University in 1975. He then entered Mount Angel Seminary, where he graduated in 1979. He was ordained in 1979 by Bishop Kenneth Steiner for the Archdiocese of Portland. He has served at St. Alexander Parish in Cornelius, St. Clare, Portland, and St. Luke, Woodburn. He also spent time on assignment in San Salvador, El Salvador.
Father Pedro Arteaga, M.Sp.S.: Parochial Vicar, St. Matthew Parish, Hillsboro Father Arteaga was born in Karlsruhe, Germany in 1964. He knew of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit from a community of priests in Germany. He came to Mexico in 1984 to study at one of the orderís four communites. In 1988 he entered the novitiate and made first vows in 1990. The congregation sent him to Italy to continue studies in theology. He was ordained a priest in 1997. He has served in Italy, Africa, Mexico and in the U.S., in Mount Angel and now at St. Matthew. Father Augustine Hilander, OP: Parochial Vicar, St. Thomas More University Parish, Eugene
Dominican Father Augustine Hilander was born in 1977. He went to a Catholic high school, then a Catholic college. In college, he discovered the faith, instructed by a Jesuit chaplain. He converted to the Catholic faith in Easter of 1997. He was ordained a Dominican priest May 31. His position at St. Thomas More will be his first priestly assignment, but he has been to Eugene before working for a summer at the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Father Ronald Nelson: Parochial Vicar, St. Anne Parish, Grants Pass Father Ronald Nelson was born in 1971, in Portland. He graduated from David Douglas High School in 1990. He received a bachelor of arts in philosophy and literature from Mount Angel Seminary in 2002 and an STB degree at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome in 2005. He was ordained, June 9, 2007. His training for ministry has included working on a retreat team at St. Mary Parish in Mount Angel, work at St. Mary Cathedral Parish in Portland and at Queen of Peace Parish in Salem, assisting with the Los Embajadores summer program, and Clinical Pastoral Education at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eugene. He has also served as a guide for the excavations under St. Peter Basilica in Vatican City. He was a volunteer with the Missionaries of Charity 1997-98. He returns to Oregon after a study leave in Rome.
Father Luan Nguyen: Parochial Vicar, Our Lady of the Lake Parish, Lake Oswego Father Luan Nguyen was born in 1968 in Saigon, Vietnam. He attended elementary and secondary schools in Saigon, graduating with a secondary degree in 1986. He attended Portland State University graduating with a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering. He entered Mount Angel Seminary in the fall of 2000, earning a master of divinity degree in 2008. His ministry training has included experiences at St. Joseph Parish, Salem, Queen of Peace, Salem, MacLaren Youth Correctional facility, Woodburn, St. Peter Providence Hospital, Olympia, Wash., and St. John the Baptist Parish in Milwaukie. Father Kenneth Sampson: Parochial Vicar, St. Cecilia Parish, Beaverton
Father Kenneth Sampson was born in 1968 in Ronan, Mont. He graduated from Ronan High School in 1986. He graduated from Montana State University in 1990 with a degree in marketing. He worked in marketing and as an English teacher for a Japanese language company after college. He entered Mount Angel Seminary in the fall of 1998 and earned a master of arts degree in theology in 2007 and a master of divinity degree in 2008. His ministry training experiences have included work at MacLaren Youth Corrections facility, Woodburn, St. Joseph Parish, Salem, St. Cecilia Parish, Beaverton, Portland AIDS Ministry, Veteranís Hospital, Seattle, and St. Maryís Cathedral Parish, Portland. He has also spent time as a Boy Scout chaplain, and served at Mount St. Joseph in San Jose, Calif.
Father Pablo Sanchez, M.Sp.S.: Parochial Vicar, St. Matthew, Hillsboro Father Sanchez was born in Los Angeles in 1973. He entered the novitiate on 1993 and made his first vows as a Missionary of the Holy Spirit in 1995. He did his studies at Mount Angel Seminary (philosophy) and St. Johnís Seminary in Camarillo, Calif. He was ordained in 2004. His first assignment was at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Oxnard, Calif., before his current assignment at St. Mathew in Hillsboro.
Father Irudayaraj Amalanathan: Administrator, St. Boniface Parish, Sublimity Father Amalanathan was born in Nallamanayackenpatty, India, in 1965. He attended Arul Anandar College, Maduari, India, St. Paul Seminary, Trichy, India and Kamaraj University, Madurai, and Annamalai University, Chidambaram, India for post graduate work. He was ordained in 1991 for the Trichy Diocese in India. In Oregon, he has done assignments at St. Boniface Parish, Sublimity, and St. Anthony, Tigard.
David Briedwell, Pastoral Administrator, Good Shepherd Parish, Sheridan and St. Michael Parish, Grand Ronde Mr. Briedwell attended Chemeketa Community College. He was called to candidacy for the diaconate in 2007. He has served as pastoral associate at Sheridan and Grand Ronde.
Father Richard Colgan: Moving outside archdiocese Father Colgan was born in 1952, in Malone, N.Y. He holds a bachelorís in philosophy and a masterís degree in theology from the Catholic University of America. He was ordained in 1979 as a Paulist priest. He worked at the Paulist Center in Boston from 1996 until 2003 before coming to work as an associate pastor at St. Philip Neri in 2003. He has been working as pastor of St. Philip Neri Parish in Southeast Portland. He has moved to Canada to do parish work in Toronto, Ontario.
Father Heiko Junge: On leave, Society of St. James Father Heiko Junge, pastor of Holy Trinity in Bandon, will travel to South America to perform missionary work with the Society of St. James. He has served at St. Charles, Portland; St. Henryís, Gresham; St. Pius X, Portland; St. Frederic, St. Helens and Holy Trinity in Bandon.
Father Hugo Maese, M.Sp.S.: Moved outside archdiocese Holy Spirit Father Hugo Maese, who was ordained and served at St. Matthew Parish in Hillsboro, has been assigned to work at his orderís theologate in South Bend, Ind., at the University of Notre Dame. He will be joining a formation team, working with seminarians of the Missionaries of the Holy Spirit order.
Father Jeyamani Paul: Moved outside archdiocese Father Paul, who was serving at St. Boniface Parish in Sublimity, is returning to his native India. He was ordained in 1992 for the Archdiocese of Madurai, South India. There he was a teacher at St. Paul Regional Theological Seminary and assisted at parishes.
Father Dale Waddill: Retired Father Dale Waddill, pastor at St. Peter Parish in Southeast Portland, will retire this year. Born in Lakeview in 1938, he graduated from Mount Angel Seminary High School in 1956. He also attended the Sulpician Seminary of the Northwest. He was ordained in 1964 by Archbishop Edward Howard. He served at St. John the Apostle Parish, Oregon City, St. Boniface, Sublimity, St. Joseph, Salem, St. Cecilia, Beaverton, Holy Trinity, Bandon, St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Astoria, and St. Peter, Portland. He also served as a hospital chaplain and taught at Serra Catholic High School and Sacred Heart Academy.
