Immigration to be considered at annual lecture

Immigration is the topic of the annual Tobin Lecture, scheduled for 10 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 10, at All Saints Church.

Presenter will be immigrant rights attorney Siovhan Sheridan-Ayala. She will consider the theme “For You Were Once Strangers: A Catholic response to immigration.” The Tobin Lecture is sponsored by the Archdiocese of Portland’s Office of Justice and Peace.

Sheridan-Ayala is an attorney licensed in Oregon and Washington. She works at Immigrant Law Group, where she focuses on representing immigrants in removal proceedings as well as those who are survivors of domestic violence. She has worked in the immigration field since 1997.

Her work experience includes serving as director of Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services, board chair of the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, an intern at the Washington State Legislature and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Sheridan-Ayala is a graduate of the University of Washington Law School, Harvard Divinity School and Northwestern University.

She currently serves on the Governor’s Council for Domestic Violence, and is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

She has written articles on immigration law and lectured widely on the subject.

“People feel very tired of living in the shadows,” she told the Sentinel in 2004, speaking about the plight of undocumented immigrants.
The Tobin Lecture is held each year in honor of the late Monsignor Thomas Tobin, who dedicated his life’s work to struggles for social justice and liturgical renewal.

There is no cost for the Tobin Lecture.
