Temporary driver's license bill goes to voters in November

In November, Oregonians will vote on a bill that, if approved, would create a limited purpose and limited duration driver card for qualified residents.

Oregon State Legislature approved Senate Bill 833 with broad bipartisan support.

Applicants would provide proof of identity and proof of residence in Oregon for more than one year, and they would also be required to pass a written and behind-the-wheel driver test.

“The Oregon Driver Card is especially important for immigrant families among us who are our modern-day neighbors,” said a statement from the Oregon Catholic Conference, a lobbying group that represents the bishops of the Archdiocese of Portland and Baker Diocese. “Too many immigrant families have been torn apart by the simple act of driving.”

The Oregon Driver Card would allow mothers and fathers to drive their children safely and legally to school, to doctor’s appointments, and to family activities and community events, the statement said.

“This law will not solve the complex problems of immigration, but it is a step in the right direction and a gesture of good will toward those who are most in need,” the statement said. “The Oregon Driver Card is good for our neighbors, good for families, and good for Oregon.  Let’s keep our roads and our residents safe.”

Thanks to our diversity and shared communities, even though some may consider our family dyslexic, we acknowledge and accept our family, and offer the best and most love we can to each other and to all. AMDG!
