Maryville Nursing Home will have a different ZIP code than the rest of the ministries on the campus of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon.
BEAVERTON — The Post Office will not change a re-zoning plan that leaves the campus of the Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon in two different ZIP codes.
Sister Adele Marie Altenhofen, Sisters of St. Mary of Oregon Ministries Corporation President, and Sister Charlene Herinckx, superior general, met with representatives of the Beaverton and Aloha Post Offices July 25. The nuns were informed that the decision regarding the new ZIP codes had been made on the national level and could not be changed.
Postal officials said that ZIP codes exist for their sorting purposes and that the decision was made to maintain Farmington addresses in 97007. Maryville’s address is on Farmington Road. The Sisters’ convent and the other ministries on the large campus — including Valley Catholic School — will be in the new 97078 ZIP code.
“While other options were noted, they would all require additional dollars or staffing and our ministries are not in a position to absorb those,” Sister Adele Marie said. “We realize that the U.S. Postal Service faces many challenges in its daily efforts to deliver the mail across our region and across our country. But it is unfortunate their system doesn’t allow for feedback in advance of these kinds of changes or consideration after decisions are made. This has been a disappointing experience.”
