Several department heads, staff leaving archdiocese

Four Portland archdiocesan staffers are leaving their jobs this week and another is retiring under a reorganization plan made public Wednesday.

The department heads and key staff are departing as part of a reorganization of the Pastoral Center that serves the 124 Catholic parishes, 22 missions and 49 Catholic schools in Western Oregon.

Those departing are:  Robert Mizia, superintendent of Catholic Schools; Deacon Tom Gornick, director of Evangelization; Barbara Baltz-Shields, director of Human Resources; and Ben Louie, Human Resources generalist.

Bud Bunce, director of Communications, also announced his retirement after 23 years with the archdiocese.

Archbishop Alexander Sample said the changes are part of the archdiocese’s effort to streamline operations and better communicate with the parishes and schools the Pastoral Center serves.

The reorganization is the result of a months-long review of pastoral center operations by a firm retained by the archdiocese.

“We feel a natural sense of loss saying goodbye to colleagues we know and admire,” said Archbishop Sample. “These are men and women who have worked hard and well for the archdiocese for many years. I am deeply grateful to them for their service, and they have my best wishes for the future. The evolving needs of the archdiocese don’t diminish the significant contributions they have made to the Church in Western Oregon.”
