Catholic News Service
Collection will aid charitable initiatives of the Holy Father.
The annual collection for the support of the work of the Holy Father will be taken the weekend of June 28-29 in the parishes of the Archdiocese of Portland. The collection is taken on the weekend closest to the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul, June 29. The theme for this year’s collection is “Be a Witness of Charity.” The collection is an opportunity for Catholics around the world to join together in supporting the work of the Holy Father.
The Collection for the Holy Father, also known as Peter’s Pence, helps Pope Francis support victims of war and national disasters, and other charitable works. In a talk in 2013, Pope Francis said, “There is much that we can do to benefit the poor, the needy, and those who suffer; and to favor justice, promote reconciliation and build peace.” Parishioner support of Peter’s Pence is one way to join in the work of the Holy Father.
In 2013, parishioners in the Archdiocese of Portland contributed more than $98,000 to support the work of the Holy Father. Parishioners are encouraged to be generous in their support for the Collection for the Holy Father.
