SCAPPOOSE — Archbishop Alexander Sample and three friends went on a day fishing trip this spring in the Multnomah Channel between Scappoose and the Columbia River.

Welcoming the archbishop on board were Will Kessi of St. Wenceslaus Parish in Scappoose, his father-in-law Gary Wilhelm of St. Juan Diego and Roger Martin of St. Patrick, the latter two veteran public policy advocates.

The day started slowly, with no fish biting for any of the several dozen boats. Someone suggested quitting, but someone else cited the Gospel story about the frustrated apostles whom Jesus sent back into deep water after an entire night with no fish. In the Gospel, the apostles then get such a catch that their nets are at the point of splitting.

Out on the Multnomah Channel, there was no risk of tearing the fishing gear, but within 10 minutes of the gospel interchange, the archbishop hooked a large salmon.

He smiled and said aloud to no one in particular, "Oh you of little faith.” It was not long before another fish was on someone’s line.

The archbishop is an experienced outdoorsman who has been biking and kayaking during rare free time in western Oregon.
