El Centinela, Sentinel win more awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Oregon Catholic Press and the two newspapers it publishes shared 24 journalism awards given out here by the Catholic Press Association.

The Catholic Sentinel earlier this spring received four awards from the Society of Professional Journalists, bringing the total take to 27.

El Centinela, the monthly Spanish-language newspaper, received 15 awards, including first place in the category of general excellence from the CPA.

Editor Rocío Rios also won a second-place award for individual excellence. Jon DeBellis, Catholic Sentinel news editor, won an honorable mention for the Spanish translation of his story about a Catholic farmer.

The Catholic Sentinel  brought home a first place in best reporting on special age group-senior citizens, for Ed Langlois' story, "Long-term care facility residents face death constantly."

Langlois also received a second place in feature photography for a photograph of a young girl blowing a bee off a bouquet at the 2013 Freedom Mass. That photo also was recognized by the Society for Professional Journalists.

Archbishop Alexander Sample's column won two awards for El Centinela — a second place for best regular column by an archbishop, and third place for best spiritual column.

Editor Robert Pfohman won an award for the editorial he wrote: "Whither people of God?"

An editorial urging an old way to look anew at the growing debt problem in society won honorable mention plaudits.

Antonio Andraus, Colombian journalist in charge of the special reports for El Centinela, won three awards. He worked for more than 30 years at the newspaper El Espectador, in Bogotá, Colombia.

OCP received second place honors for its 2013 Summer Catalog, and third place its Recursos en Español y Bilingües 2013-14/Spanish and Bilingual Resources 2013-14 catalog.

Former Catholic Sentinel reporter Kristen Hannum won a third place award in the magazine category for best analysis writing for her piece "Voting block," in U.S. Catholic Magazine. She lives in Denver.
