It’s a Holy Week memory that is still echoing around L’Arche Portland, a community of people with and without intellectual disabilities.

On Holy Thursday, members of the L'Arche community gathered to break bread and wash one another's feet. The rites are a sign a sign of their mutual service and care for one another.

“L’Arche’s emphasis is on servant leadership,” says Andy Noethe, executive director of L’Arche Portland.

After hearing the story of the Last Supper, the community broke into teams. Members started washing each other’s feet.

“People were caring for each other,” says Noethe. “It was a moment symbolizing we do care for one another each day.”

Core members, those with disabilities, lead prayer at L’Arche.

“They are the constants in our community,” says Noethe. “Core members have been doing it for years.”
