The Catholic Sentinel newspaper has received four awards from the Society of Professional Journalists after entering its non-daily newspaper awards contest.
The awards, for work that appeared last calendar year in the statewide twice-monthly diocesan newspaper, was awarded by the Greater Oregon Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.
Its membership is made up of working journalists from Oregon newspapers and radio and television stations.
Robert Pfohman, editor, won first place in editorial writing for "Mideast is waiting to blow," regarding violence in the Middle East and a second place in editorial writing for "Whither people of God?" regarding Pope Francis.
Reporter Ed Langlois won two second place awards, one for education reporting and the other for feature photographer. The education reporting piece was about Megan Scheidler, a young student with disabilities at Our Lady of the Lake Parish School in Lake Oswego who inspired her fellow classmates. The feature photography award was for a shot from the Freedom Mass at the Grotto last year.
