A cold and rainy morning did not stop the Mariachi Mass at the 30th annual Cinco de Mayo festival at Tom McCall Waterfront Park on Sunday.

The entrance procession was led by the musicians of Mariachi Guadalajara, women and men dressed in traditional costume and Archbishop Emeritus John Vlazny. The archbishop concelebrated the Mass with Father Jorge Hernández of St. John the Baptist Parish, Milwaukie and Deacon Jesus Espinoza of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, Aloha.

The Mass marked its 15th anniversary. All have been celebrated by Archbishop Vlazny.

In recent years, the crowd has diversified, including Catholics of all cultures in the Mass.

"As you know at this event we meet with friends, our compadres of Guadalajara and sing "Viva Mexico , Viva America," because this is a celebration of our Hispanic culture. This is a celebration of the diversity of our church, " said the archbishop, whose homily was in Spanish.

"As members, we all work together building the Kingdom of God, for the benefit of all and more for the needy in our communities," said Archbishop Vlazny. "We seek peace and justice for our undocumented brothers and sisters. Through the Holy Spirit and the sacraments our spirits are full of love and compassion for all pilgrims in this human journey."

Many local Catholics from several parishes attended, including Marcos Moreno with his daughter Isabella, who came from St. Anne Church in Gresham.

After Communion all joined in a long applause for the Archbishop Emeritus of gratitude for these 15 years celebrating Mass Mariachi.
