On Holy Thursday at St. Peter Parish in Southeast Portland, Father Raul Marquez knelt humbly on the ground, poured water from a porcelain pitcher over parishioners’ feet, and gently dried them.

In the humble act of washing his disciples' feet, Jesus is showing all Christians how he wants them to serve others with love, Pope Francis said.

"This is the legacy that Jesus leaves us," and he wants it to be passed down through people's loving service to others, he said.

Father Marquez explained to parishioners that the act is a simple of service.

“We do with a basin of water and towels what Jesus did when he washed the feet of his disciples,” the priest said.

The Mass of the Lord’s Supper tonight was the start of the Easter Triduum, the summit of the liturgical year. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day, marking the end of the Lenten season and leading to the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil.
