Catholic Charities of Oregon has hired John Herrera as its new program manager for its Immigration Legal Services.
Herrera has worked for Catholic Charities within Immigration Legal Services for nine years as a legal assistant and Immigration Appeals accredited representative. He joined the organization after he received assistance from Catholic Charities after arriving from Colombia. He had a previous academic background in law in South America.
Herrera estimates that during his nine years at Catholic Charities he has helped more than 1,000 individuals and families with their immigration cases.
“My aim as manager will be to continue to provide the community with the high quality, low cost legal services we have always offered and even to improve them still further," said Herrera. "I hope to find ways to reach even more people and to deepen our partnerships with other legal service providers and organizations so that everyone in need can be helped.”
Catholic Charities Immigration Legal Services was founded in 1996 but the organization’s work with immigrants and refugees predates it by many decades. It provides immigration legal services to low income immigrants and refugees and engages in public education, training and community outreach to promote justice for newcomers and conditions for their full participation in American society. In the fiscal year 2012-13, Immigration Legal Services served more than 4,500 clients.
