CORNELIUS — An attempt to raise funds on the internet for a bigger Catholic church in Cornelius has raised $1,785 so far. The goal for St. Alexander Parish on its Indiegogo crowdsourcing campaign is $100,000. Total cost of the construction project is $3 million.

The parish serves mostly low income Hispanic families who can't afford to pay for the project on their own. Masses are so crowded that some parishioners sit in classrooms and watch the liturgy on screens.

Indiegogo is one of several websites giving non-profits a platform to ask for funds. The window for Indiegogo donations to St. Alexander ends late in March.
