University of Portland will host retired U.S. Naval Academy professor Barbara Harff as she presents her lecture “A Murderous Century: The Detection, Explanation, and Prevention of Genocide” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 20 in Buckley Center Room 163 on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd. The event, sponsored by the Garaventa Center for Catholic Intellectual Life and American Culture, is free and open to the public.
Harff is a professor emerita of political science at the U.S. Naval Academy and recipient of the 2013 Auschwitz Institute’s Raphael Lemkin Prize in outstanding contribution to the cause of genocide prevention. She is the co-author of Ethnic Conflict in World Politics, published in 2003 with her husband Ted Gurr. Harff pioneered the systematic comparative analysis of the preconditions of genocides and political mass murders, and continues to prepare updated global risk assessments for governments, the United Nations, and NGOs.
