Archbishop's Catholic Appeal to begin

"Teach, Bless, Serve" is the theme for the 2014 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal. This year’s appeal will highlight two areas of ministry: campus ministry and vocations.

The Appeal helps support campus ministry at 11 colleges and universities in western Oregon. Campus ministry provides a support group for students in a Catholic environment and opportunities for faith enrichment.

The Archdiocese of Portland currently has 32 men studying for the priesthood. Ten men were ordained as priests for this archdiocese in 2012, and in 2013 eight men were ordained. The Appeal helps to provide the support needed for ensuring that there are enough priests to serve in our parishes in the future.

“We are all one in mission, and one in heart and mind, as we endeavor to continue and expand the important work of the New Evangelization in our parishes, cities and town throughout western Oregon,” wrote Archbishop Alexander Sample in a message to parishioners about the appeal.

In addition to the two ministries being highlighted this year, the Appeal helps to support a number of other ministries in the archdiocese. Ministry to the deaf, to people with disabilities, Catholic Schools and Hispanic ministry are examples. The Appeal also supports the training of permanent deacons, lay ministry training and continuing education for priests. Supporting retired priests is another important aspect of the Appeal.

The goal for the 2014 Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal is $3,640,000.  Each parish is encouraged to increase the participation in the number of parishioners pledging to the Appeal.  Announcement Weekend for the Appeal will be Feb. 15-16 and Commitment Weekend is scheduled for Feb. 22-23.

Parishioners are asked to prayerfully consider their support for the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal.
