Youths hold vigil during the 2013 Rally for Life in Portland. This year's event is set for Jan. 19.
An annual rally to advocate for unborn children is set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 19, in the heart of Portland.
The Roe v. Wade Memorial Rally is expected to draw thousands to Pioneer Courthouse Square. Pro-life advocates estimate that since the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in 1973, 56 million pregnancies have ended in abortion.
"Because of the good work of pro-lifers, however, millions of unborn babies have been saved," says Oregon Right to Life, main organizer of the event. "No matter what happens politically we can still help women choose life for their babies. There is no law against saving lives!"
Those who oppose abortion hold vigil regularly outside clinics in Oregon's major cities. Abortion rates have dropped over the past few decades. In Oregon, the number of abortions per 1,000 women of childbearing age has dropped from 25 in 1991 to about 19 now, according to the Guttmacher Institute.
A march for life downtown begins immediately following the Jan. 19 rally.
