Praying for Christian unity

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is celebrated the week of Jan. 18-25.  The week provides an opportunity for all Christians to join together in prayer “that they all may be one” (John 17:21).  The theme for 2014 is “Has Christ been divided?” (1Cor.1:13). The week is typically celebrated in January in the northern hemisphere and around Pentecost in the southern hemisphere.

In 1908 the first observance of the “Church Unity Octave” was initiated by the co-founder of the Society of the Atonement, Reverend Paul Wattson. In 1964 Pope Paul VI and Patriarch Athenagoras prayed in Jerusalem “that they all may be one” (John 17:21). The first use of Week of Prayer material, prepared jointly by the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches and the Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity (now the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity), was in 1968.

Catholic parishes in the Archdiocese of Portland are encouraged to collaborate with neighboring Christian churches in planning local observances and celebrations.
