The Philippines recently experienced a massive typhoon that has left thousands of people dead or missing and many thousands more homeless and hungry.
Archbishop Alexander Sample has called upon Catholics in western Oregon to respond with prayers and financial support.
Archbishop Sample expressed his solidarity and that of the Archdiocese of Portland with the people of the Philippines. Archbishop Sample stated, “I was greatly saddened to hear of the tremendous loss of life and devastation caused by typhoon Haiyan.
I offer my prayers for the people mourning the death of loved ones, for those struggling to survive, and for those rescue workers assisting them. Catholic Relief Services is in the Philippines and is offering assistance. I call upon Catholics of the Archdiocese to pray for those affected by this tragedy, and to offer financial support by being generous in special collections that will be taken up in parishes for Catholic Relief Services effort in the Philippines.”
Archbishop Sample will celebrate a Mass on Sunday, November 17 at 7:00 pm at St. Clare Church (SW 19th & Spring Garden Street, Portland). The Mass will be an opportunity to remember the people of the Philippines in prayer.
Special collections will be taken in parishes of the Archdiocese, and parishioners may learn more about the Catholic Relief Services efforts in the Philippines, or donate directly to Catholic Relief Services.
