RAINIER — In September, Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church hosted a service to celebrate the 50th wedding anniversaries of two couples from the parish. Father Henry Rufo, pastor of the church, celebrated the Mass and service to honor Riley and Leora (Lee) Dillon and John and Carol Chesebro.

Riley and Leora (Lee) Dillon

After Riley’s family moved to the Northwest from Arkansas, he graduated from Vancouver High School in 1951 and then joined the Navy. He worked a telephone company in California where he met Lee.

Lee grew up in Pittsburg, Pa., graduating from Turtle Creek High School in 1961.  She moved to California shortly after graduation.

They were married on August 31, 1963, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Monte Clair, Calif. They moved around following Riley’s telephone career, finally settling in Beaverton.

They had four children: Suzette (deceased), Nicole, Lance, and Chad.  Nicole lives in Rainier, Lance in Beaverton, and Chad in Aloha.  The Dillons have six grandchildren.
In 1995, they moved to Rainier into “semi-retirement.”

Both are active at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Lee is involved in hospitality, rummage and bazaar fundraising, and making rosaries. Riley is chair of the parish finance council, is an altar server, and also works on fundraising.  He also has a special interest in evangelization.  He volunteered to be an altar server in retirement because, as a convert to Catholicism, he missed out on being an “altar boy.”  He is always encouraging people to participate more in their Catholic faith.

John and Carol Chesebro

They met in 1962 at a mutual friend’s wedding and were married on Aug. 31, 1963, at
Vermont Hill’s Methodist Church.

They have three children: John III, Joseph, and Jason.  They have two grandchildren: Bradley and Trent.

In 1977, they joined St. Agatha Church in Sellwood/Portland.

John worked as a warehousemen until retiring in 2001. They lived in the Milwaukie/Gladstone area for more than 30 years before moving to Rainier upon retirement.

They have been parishioners at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the 12 years, and at various times have been involved in fundraising, music ministry, Eucharistic ministers, and hospitality.

Outside interests include community service, belonging to the local garden club, growing their own produce, and raising chickens.
