The annual convocation for priests will take place in Newport, Oct. 7-Oct. 10. The convocation is an opportunity for the priests of the archdiocese to come together for prayer, study, reflection and Presbyteral Council business. The topic of this year’s convocation is clergy health: physical, emotional and spiritual health. The keynote speaker will be Father James Flavin. The convocation will include discussion of a Revised Clergy Personnel Manual, and Archbishop Sample will give his first address to the clergy of the Archdiocese to close the convocation.
Father James Flavin is a priest of the Archdiocese of Boston. He is currently the president of the St. John Vianney Center outside of Philadelphia. Father Flavin has 20 years experience in inner city parish ministry, and he is a licensed psychotherapist. His talks will include the topics of the changing priesthood, celibate intimacy, emotional health, wellness and holiness.
Providence Health Plans will provide an overview of the variety of services that the medical coverage provides. Providence staff will also be available to do a “health snapshot” for those priests that would like to participate.
The convocation will provide an opportunity for the priests to honor this year’s jubilarians. Those being honored this year include those celebrating 60 years of ordination: Father Vincent Cunniff, Msgr. Francis Campbell, Father Dan Reynolds and Msgr. Arthur Dernbach. Those celebrating 50 years of ordination are: Father Francis Chun, Father Kenneth Hume, Father Bruce Brown, Father Jack Krall, and Father Rock Sassano. Priests celebrating 25 years of ordination are: Father Nicholaus Nilema, ALCP, Father Joseph Barita, ALCP, and Father Nathan Zodrow, OSB. Priests who have recently retired will also be recognized: Father Richard Rossman, Father Bruce Brown, Father Karl Schray, Msgr. Carl Gimpl, Msgr. Dennis O’Donovan, Father David Cullings, and Father Patrick Walsh.
