A summer religion session for children in Portland's inner city enters its 30th year this month. The Immaculate Heart Parish Vacation Bible School is slated for 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 19-31. Children in grades 2 to 6 from Immaculate Heart and nearby parishes are joined by non-Catholic children in the session, which includes a trip to the Grotto, Bible classes, singing and games.
The Knights and Ladies of Peter Claver began the Vacation Bible School in 1983 and were joined by African American Catholic Community in 1992. The goal, organizers say, is to inspire youth to use courage and strength while developing faith, love, unity and a continual prayer life.
