Pope Francis greets crowds in St. Peter Square.

Parishioners in the Archdiocese of Portland will have the opportunity to help support the work of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, by contributing to the Peter’s Pence collection the weekend of June 29-30.  June 29 is the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul. The collection provides funds to allow the Holy Father to carry out acts of charity to victims of war, oppression and disasters. The theme for the collection is “Be a Pilgrim of Charity."

The Feast of Saints Peter and Paul will have particular significance for the archdiocese this year, because Archbishop Alexander Sample will be in Rome to receive the pallium from Pope Francis. The pallium is worn only by the pope and metropolitan archbishops.  It is a sign of unity between the metropolitan archdiocese and the universal church.

The history of Peter’s Pence dates back to late 8th century England. The king asked his subjects to provide a pence to help support the work of the pope. While the collection changed over the centuries, Pope Pius IX established the modern day collection to assist the ministry of the Holy Father.

The collection for the Peter’s Pence provides an opportunity for all Catholics to join in solidarity with the work of the pope. Last year Catholics in the Archdiocese of Portland contributed more than $103,600 to support the works of the Holy Father. Parishioners are encouraged again to be generous in their support.
