Marylee King, who directed programs at the Macdonald Center in Portland's Old Town, has retired. After 25 years as a college administrator, she began volunteering by visiting low-income residents of Old Town and helping break isolation in a neighborhood where many homeless people live.
She was soon hired by the center, which offers apartments for the frail elderly, visits and money management, among other things. The ministry emerged from the St. André Bessette Downtown Chapel. King increased the number of nursing programs that train their students at the center. She also worked hard to create a program to help vulnerable residents manage their medications.
