Pro-life activists in Oregon are collecting signatures for a 2014 ballot initiative to stop taxpayer funding of abortion. The Corvallis-based petition committee early in May mailed 10,000 petition sheets to volunteers and other supporters across the state.
This is the group’s second attempt to place the issue before voters using only volunteers. More than 116,000 signatures are required.
Oregon Health Authority figures show that more than 4,000 abortions per year are covered by the Oregon Health Plan. About half of the abortions in the state are publicly funded.
“Oregonians should not be forced to fund abortions with their tax dollars — especially elective and late-term abortions,” says Jeff Jimerson, a chief petitioner.
