Archbishop Alexander Sample will celebrate the annual Mass for deceased clergy, Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at 5:30 pm, at St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The date of the Mass is the anniversary of the death of Archbishop Cornelius Power, who died in 1997.
The Mass remembers in particular those priests who died since the Mass was celebrated last year. Priests of the Archdiocese of Portland who have died this year are Fathers Cathal Brennan and Gerald McCray. Religious order priests who have served in the Archdiocese, and who have died this year, are Jesuit Father Jack Morris, Benedictine Father Jerome Young, Holy Cross Father John Kurtzke, Jr., and Jesuit Father Neill Meany.
The Mass will also remember the past Archbishops and the Auxiliary Bishop who have served this Archdiocese: Archbishop Francis N. Blanchet (died 1883), Archbishop Charles J. Seghers (died 1886), Archbishop William H. Gross (died 1898), Archbishop Alexander Christi (died 1925), Archbishop Edward D. Howard (died 1983), Archbishop Robert J. Dwyer (died 1976), Archbishop Cornelius M. Power (died 1997) and Auxiliary Bishop Paul Waldschmidt, CSC (died 1994).
