NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Rev. Mr. Mark F. DeMott is among three deacons in the Congregation of Holy Cross who will be ordained priests at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the campus of the University of Notre Dame.
During his diaconate year, Rev. Mr. DeMott has been serving as a residence hall director and campus minister at the University of Portland, a Holy Cross-founded school.
The eldest of five children, he was born in Kansas City, Mo. and grew up in Holland, Mich. where he graduated from Holland High School in 1998. He attended the University of Notre Dame, earning a bachelor’s degree in 2002 and a Master of Divinity degree in 2007.
Since entering formation with Holy Cross, Rev. Mr. DeMott has served in South Bend, Ind.; Nuevo León, México; Colorado Springs; and Jinja, Uganda. He has been a science teacher, choir director and chaplain.
He will say a Mass at the Chapel of Christ the Teacher on the University of Portland campus at 9 p.m., Sunday, April 21.
“I hope that life in Holy Cross will place me in real relationship with many kinds of people," Rev. Mr. DeMott said. "I hope that it will challenge me to embrace the Gospel. I hope that it will draw me more closely into God's presence. And, I hope that sharing my journey with others will offer them the same.”
Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria, Ill., himself a Holy Cross priest, will confer the Sacrament of Holy Orders.
By professing perpetual vows of poverty, chastity and obedience, Rev. Mr. DeMott has already committed himself to the common life and the apostolic work of the congregation.
