The Liturgy of the Word has begun at Archbishop Alexander Sample's installation Mass, held in the University of Portland sports dome. The first reading was proclaimed in Spanish. From the Acts of the Apostles, it told the story of Peter proclaiming Jesus on Pentecost. It was a reading about evangelization that ended with a passage about 3,000 people accepting baptism.

There are well more than 3,000 people here today.

The second reading, read in Vietnamese, spoke of how a little leaven can create a whole "fresh batch of dough."

The gospel, from John, told the story of Jesus appearing to Mary Magdalene, who turned from sorrow to spreading the news about Jesus.

Though thousands came, more could watch it live via streaming webcast.
Jason Kidd, youth minister at Our Lady of the Lake Parish, was busy working with Christina Polowicz and Jane Price, blogging and posting photos for coveritlive.com on behalf of the archdiocese.

"It's good to be a part of this event, and to help people who couldn't attend to witness it," Polowicz said.

"This is very exciting to be here to witness this," said Mary Harvey, a leader from the Knights of St. Peter Claver, an association of African American Catholic women. "This is overwhelming," said Harvey, wearing a white fez and looking out over the crowd of bishops, priests, Religious and lay people.
