For the 18th year in a row, Kells Irish Pub employees swept cash from the ceiling of the downtown Portland restaurant Tuesday morning and donated it to the Center for Medically Fragile Children at Providence Child Center.
This year, Kells customers donated $6,761 in dollar bills and coins. Kells owners Gerard and Lucille McAleese matched that amount, bringing the grand total to $13,522 donated to Providence Child Center.
The center offers the only pediatric residential facility in the Northwest providing 24-hour skilled nursing care for children with profound disabilities and complex medical needs.
During the event, students from The Murray School of Irish Dancing performed while children, their parents, staff and volunteers from the Center for Medically Fragile Children watched the "green rain" fall from above. The ceiling sweep is a prelude to the Kells Portland St. Patrick's Irish Festival, which will be held March 15-17.
