Archbishop John Vlazny prepares sacred chrism during 2012 chrism Mass.
The annual Chrism Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, March 20, at St. Mary's Cathedral in Northwest Portland. The Mass will begin at 7 p.m. The Chrism Mass is celebrated to bless the Holy Oils for use in the coming year.
The Holy Oils to be blessed are the Oil of Catechumens used to anoint those preparing for the sacraments of initiation, the Oil of the Sick used for those seeking healing of the body, mind or spirit, and the Holy Chrism which is used in the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and for ordaining a priest or bishop. Holy Chrism is also used in the dedication of a church altar. The Holy Oils will be distributed to each parish in the Archdiocese of Portland.
The Chrism Mass also celebrates the unity of a bishop and the priests of a diocese. The priests of the Archdiocese will renew their promise of obedience to the Archbishop and his successors, and renew their commitment to pastoral ministry and service.
Catholic are invited to join the Archbishop, the priests and seminarians of the Archdiocese at the Chrism Mass on Wednesday, March 20.
