OAJC executive director dies

Emily Georges Gottfried, executive director of the Oregon Area Jewish Committee, died Sunday, Jan. 27, from complications of hemophagocytic syndrome. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Temple Beth Israel in Northwest Portland. Overflow parking will be available at

Mrs. Gottfried was a key figure in Catholic-Jewish dialogue in Portland. She served as director of the American Jewish Committee, Oregon Chapter from 1999 to 2008.
From 1988 to 1999 she was the Cultural Arts, Special Events and Publicity Director at the Mittleman Jewish Community Center in Portland. She served as cantor at Congregation Albert in Albuquerque, N.M. from 1983 to 1988.
She sang and led services at Havurah Shalom in Portland (where she also served on the board) and other locations.
She was a graduate of Pomona College, the University of Oregon and the University of New Mexico. A native Oregonian, she is survived by her husband Jeff Gottfried and daughters, Miriam and Benna Gottfried.
