Russell Butkus, University of Portland theologian, and Steven Kolmes, environmental scientist, were once invited to brief the Vatican on global climate change. At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, the UP duo will discuss the topic in the context of Second Vatican Council teachings.

The free talk takes place in room 163 of Buckley Center on campus.

Butkus and Kolmes coauthored Environmental Science and Theology in Dialogue, published by Orbis Books (2011), which won top honors from the Catholic Press Association in the category of faith and science.

Their presentation on Feb. 7 will offer a contemporary interpretation of several aspects of the Pastoral Constitution of the Church in the Modern World promulgated at Vatican II in 1965. Using theology and science, the professors make the case that global climate change is — in the words of the Council — a “problem of special urgency.”
