SPRINGFIELD — Despite protests from local church leaders, Planned Parenthood of Southwestern Oregon opened the doors of an $8.5 million center between Eugene and Springfield on Sept. 4.

It serves as headquarters for a network that includes clinics in west Eugene, Cottage Grove, Florence, Medford, Ashland and Grants Pass.

Bill Diss, pro-life director for the Knights of Columbus and founder of Precious Children, calls the new office a "prenatal killing center."

Diss has spent years standing up to Planned Parenthood, especially when the organization built a Northeast Portland center that Diss thought might degrade the lives of neighborhood children, whom he teaches at a nearby public high school.

Protesters stood across the street on opening day to voice the message that unborn children should not be killed, but should be offered for adoption. The vigil keepers also said that women who get abortions often suffer from post-abortive stress.

Planned Parenthood officials said the new center will offer surgical abortions in the future.
