The special collection for the Catholic Home Mission Appeal will be taken in the Archdiocese of Portland the weekend of April 28 – 29.  The theme for this year’s appeal is “Strengthening the Church at Home.”  The Appeal is sponsored by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The Catholic Home Missions Appeal assists 88 rural dioceses in the United States including the Dioceses of Baker, Boise, Great Falls-Billing, Helena, Yakima and Spokane as well as all three dioceses in Alaska.  Home mission dioceses lack the resources to provide basic pastoral care in parishes.  They need financial assistance to provide evangelization, religious education, ministry training and cultural ministry.  Approximately 20 percent of Home Mission Appeal grants are used for the purpose of education and formation of priests

Home mission grants help prepare priests and lay leaders to meet the unique needs of the faith communities in various rural areas such as Alaska, the Deep South and the Rocky Mountains.  In the home mission Diocese of Biloxi, grants have been received to help the diocesan run de l’Epee Deaf Center.  It is the only provider of services to Deaf people in Mississippi.  The Center helps train sign language practitioners, and the home mission grant helps keep the Center in operation.

Catholics in the Archdiocese of Portland are encouraged to be generous in their support of the church in rural home missions.  Last year parishioners contributed more than $63,700 to assist Catholics in home mission dioceses.  Parishioners are encouraged to again be generous in their support of the Catholic Home Mission Appeal the weekend of April 28 – 29.
