The annual Archdiocese of Portland Seminary Tea fundraiser to support education of Mount Angel seminarians takes place on Wednesday, May 9, at the Portland Golf Club.

Archbishop John Vlazny will be the guest of honor, accompanied in the tea’s receiving line by retired Auxiliary Bishop Kenneth Steiner and Mt. Angel Abbott Gregory Duerr, OSB.

The tea takes place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 and will be available at the door and at all Portland parishes after Masses three weeks prior to the tea.

The tradition of Portland’s Catholic women gathering once a year to meet with the archbishop at a tea began in 1935 when Gladys Dunne invited 22 friends to her home to make elaborate sandwiches and fancy home-made cookies. That year, the group congregated on the General Lee State steamship. After that, the tea moved to private homes and Dunne faithfully chaired the event through 1960.

To accommodate more guests, this year’s tea breaks from the tradition of being hosted in a private home and is being held at the Portland Gold Club. It also is being held later in the afternoon so parents can come with their school-aged children, and to attract guests who work.

This year’s special guests will include clergy and religious of the diocese, families and friends of the tea committee, relatives of founder Gladys Dunne, and children and grandchildren of tea committee members.

The 2012 seminary tea committee is co-chaired by Mary Kay Beaudoin and Mary Willis. The committee welcomed 11 new members at a planning meeting and luncheon on March 21, bringing to 125 the number of area women who help plan the annual event.

The Portland Golf Club is located at 5900 SW Scholls Ferry Road, Portland.  Parking is available at the club with overflow parking available on neighborhood streets and shuttles transporting guests to the club house.

The seminary tea committee provides spiritual and financial support to Mount Angel seminarians. Through its history, the committee’s annual tea has raised close to $1 million. Proceeds from this year’s event will be presented to Archbishop Vlazny following the tea.
