MOUNT ANGEL — Diet and health are the topics of an annual lecture set for 7 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Queen of Angels Monastery here.

The 16th annual Sister Marilyn Schwab Memorial Lecture will feature Dr. Miles Hassell speaking on, "How a Greek Grandmother Would Solve the Health Care Crisis: Which Diet and Lifestyle Choices Really Matter?"

Sponsored by Shalom Prayer Center and the Providence Benedictine Nursing Center Foundation, the free and open Schwab Memorial Lecture will be held in the Benedictine Sisters Hospitality Center, 840 S. Main Street.

Dr. Hassell is co-author of Good Food, Great Medicine with his sister Mea Hassell. The book provides guidelines for optimal health using the Mediterranean diet. The book is popular among those treating cardiac rehabilitation patients.

Dr. Hassell, in private practice at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center in Portland, established the Integrative Medicine Program at Providence Cancer Center and is a clinical instructor in the training of internal medicine residents. He twice received the Teacher of the Year award and was included in Portland's top doctors list.

The lecture is named after the late Benedictine Sister Marilyn Schwab, a leading figure in the emerging field of long term care nursing during the 1970s. Under her leadership, the Benedictine Nursing Center (which became part of the Providence Health System in 1998) became a national leader in progressive care for the elderly and chronically ill people. Sister Marilyn also served as prioress of the Benedictine Sisters of Mount Angel. She died in 1984 at 47 after a struggle with cancer. Her journal, which details the last year of her life, was published following her death and will be available at the lecture.
