Del Keller, president of the Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, arranged to hold the council's June board meeting at the new Catholic Charities building on Southeast Powell Boulevard.

Doug Alles, director of social services for Catholic Charities, led a tour, beginning in The Oratorio. With an altar and sculptures created by Tomasz Misztal, the area is ready for Mass and other prayer.  Movable walls make it available for additional uses.

Continuing their tour, members could see that for people in need, services abound.  There is shelter and counseling and job search aid.

Needed for families, many of whom move into empty apartments, is sturdy furniture. The tour concluded, at The Loaves and Fishes Cafe, on the street floor.  The cafe serves lunch to senior citizens at no charge and others are invited to make a donation.

Father Charles Zach, priest/moderator of the council, said grace and offered a brief reflection. He advised his listeners, "to let the last light of day fall on words from Holy Scripture, as they read a selection before falling asleep."

The meeting opened with the rosary and then continued with business.

Betty Egner, Church and Community Commission Chair, discussed changing the date of the annual retreat. This year, it will be, on Wednesday, Dec. 14, instead of the usual October date. The day of recollection will be held at Our Lady of Peace Retreat House in Beaverton.

The next meeting will be Sept. 12 at Christ The King Parish in Milwaukie.  All Catholic women and their guests are welcome, especially newcomers and including neighbors from southwest Washington. For more information, contact Joan Towner, [email protected]
