Priests receive new archdiocesan assignments

The Archdiocese of Portland has announced the clergy assignments that will take place this summer, most of them on July 1.

Father Charles Lienert, formerly vicar for clergy and priest moderator of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Southeast Portland, is returning from sabbatical and is assigned as pastor of St. Andrew Parish in Northeast Portland.

Father Robert Krueger, retiring as pastor at St. Andrew Parish in Northeast Portland, will serve as priest moderator for St. Francis Parish in Southeast Portland.

Father John Waldron, pastor at Holy Trinity Parish in Beaverton, will become pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Canby.

Father Thomas Yurchak, pastor of St. Patrick Parish in Canby, will become pastor of St. Jude Parish, Eugene.

Father John McGrann, pastor of St. Jude in Eugene, has been named pastor at Holy Trinity Parish in Beaverton.

Father Timothy Murphy, in residence at St. John the Baptist in Milwaukie, will take over pastoral duties at St. Patrick Parish in Northwest Portland. He will maintain an office at Central Catholic High School, where he serves as president.

Holy Cross Father Robert Loughery, who was serving as pastor at both St. Patrick Parish in Northwest Portland and St. Vincent de Paul Downtown Chapel, will continue as pastor at the Downtown Chapel only.

Father Wayne Dawson, parochial vicar at St. Joseph in Salem, has been appointed pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Southeast Portland.

Father Amancio Rodrigues, pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Southeast Portland, will become pastor of St. Augustine Parish in Lincoln City.

Father Mell Stead, pastor at St. Augustine Parish in Lincoln City, will retire to St. John Vianney Residence in Beaverton.

Father Carl Flach, current pastor at St. Philip Parish in Redland, will retire as well to St. John Vianney Residence in Beaverton.

A pastor for St. Philip in Redland will be announced at a later date.

Paulist Father Steve Bossi, pastor at St. Philip Neri Parish in Southeast Portland, will be assigned to a position outside the archdiocese.

Replacing Father Bossi as pastor will be Paulist Father Richard Colgan, parochial vicar at St. Philip Neri.

Father Charles Wood, assigned outside the Archdiocese of Portland, will return to become parochial vicar at St. Henry Parish in Gresham.

Father Peter Makalla is returning to his congregation (Apostolic Life Community of Priests) for assignment. He is currently parochial vicar at St. Henry in Gresham.

Father Victor Perez, parochial vicar at St. Mary Parish in Eugene will be the new parochial vicar at St. James Parish in McMinnville. Father Perez will also serve Good Shepherd Parish in Sheridan and St. Michael Parish in Grand Ronde.

Father Ted Prentice, recently ordained, will be assigned as parochial vicar at St. Mary Parish in Eugene.

Father Sean Weeks, also newly ordained, will become the parochial vicar at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Lake Oswego.

Father Peter Smith, parochial vicar at Our Lady of the Lake in Lake Oswego, was appointed for the study of Canon Law at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

Father John Cihak, faculty member at Mount Angel Seminary, has been appointed for the study of theology at Gregorian University in Rome.

Holy Cross Father Louis DelFra, recently ordained, will be assigned as the new parochial vicar at Holy Redeemer Parish in North Portland.

Father Rodolfo Lopez has been assigned as parochial vicar at St. Alexander Parish in Cornelius.

Father Celso Rodrigues-Silva will be assigned outside the archdiocese.

Father Bossi was born in Seattle. He is a 1963 graduate of Seattle University. He holds a master's degree in Natural Resource Economics from Iowa State University, and a master's of divinity degree from the Washington Theological Union. He moved to Portland in 1996 where he served as pastor of St. Philip Neri Parish until July 1.

Father Bossi will become the director of formation for the Paulists. He will be responsible for the education and formation of Paulist seminarians at St. Paul's College in Washington, D.C.

Father Cihak was born in 1970 in San Diego. He earned a bachelor's degree at Notre Dame, and an STB and STL at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. His seminary training was at Mount Angel and then at the North American College in the Vatican City. He was ordained in 1998. After finishing up his studies in Rome, he was assigned to be parochial vicar at St. Anne's, Grants Pass, in 1999. He had been serving on the faculty at Mount Angel Seminary since 2001.

Father Colgan was born in 1952, in Malone, N.Y. He holds a bachelor's in philosophy and a master's degree in theology from the Catholic University of America. He was ordained in 1979 as a Paulist priest.

He worked at the Paulist Center in Boston from 1996 until 2003 before coming to work as an associate pastor at St. Philip Neri in 2003.

Father Dawson came to the archdiocese from South Africa. He was born in 1963 in Cape Town, South Africa. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Cape Town in 1998. He has been visiting the Archdiocese of Portland for several summers, working in parishes here. Several members of Father Dawson's family live in the United States. He was parochial vicar at St. Joseph Parish in Salem since July 2003.

Father DelFra was ordained a priest in the Congregation of Holy Cross in April 2004, at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart at the University of Notre Dame. He completed his theological studies at the University of Notre Dame in 2003, and served his deacon year at Holy Redeemer Parish in North Portland in 2003ñ04.

He will continue his ministry as parochial vicar at Holy Redeemer.

Father Flach was born Dec. 31, 1932, in Chicago. He received a bachelor's degree from St. Edward Seminary in Kenmore, Wash., in 1954 and a masters of divinity in 1958. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Portland in 1958. He also did post-graduate work at Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.

He served in parishes across western Oregon, most recently at St. Matthew, Hillsboro, and at St. Philip in Redland.

Father Krueger was born Jan. 20, 1929, in Portland. He attended college at Mount Angel Seminary from 1948 to 1952. He graduated seminary at St. Edward's Seminary in Kenmore, Wash., in 1956 and was ordained in May of that year. He later attended Gonzaga University in Spokane, Wash., where he received a master's degree in education.

He had been pastor at St. Andrew Parish in Northeast Portland since August 1990.

Father Lienert was born July 6, 1942, in Portland. He attended college at Mount Angel Seminary from 1960 to 1964. He later attended St. Thomas Seminary in Seattle, Wash., where he graduated with a master of divinity in 1968. He was later ordained that same year.

From 1991 until July 2003, he served as vicar for clergy for the archdiocese.

He served as administrator at St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Southeast Portland for one year in 1993, and has served as priest moderator there since 1997.

Father Lopez was born in 1970. He was ordained for the Diocese of Tehuantepec, Mexico, in 2002. He worked as director of the Mission Santa Maria Chimalapa, in Oaxaca, Mexico.

Father McGrann was born in 1941 in Seattle. He attended Washington state's St. Edward and St. Thomas Seminary and was ordained in 1967 for the Diocese of Spokane. He arrived in the Portland Archdiocese in 1998 to become administrator of St. Jude Parish, Eugene.

Father Murphy was born in Portland in 1940 and is a Central Catholic graduate. He attended St. Thomas Seminary in Washington and was ordained in 1967 for the archdiocese. He is president of Central Catholic High School. His last assignment as pastor was from 1995 to 1997, when he was co-pastor of St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Southeast Portland.

Father Perez was born April 28, 1948, in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. He was ordained for the diocese of San Luis Potosi in 1975.

In addition to serving in several Mexican parishes, Father Perez has served at St. Patrick Parish, Portland, and Sacred Heart Parish, Medford. He was administrator at St. Patrick Parish in Independence from 1996 to 2000 before becoming parochial vicar at St. Mary Parish in Eugene in 2000.

Father Prentice was born in Portland in 1963. He graduated from Benson Polytechnic High School in 1981 and the University of Portland in 1985 with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He worked as a mechanical engineer until returning for a master of divinity from Mount Angel Seminary in 2004.

He was ordained in May 2004 for the archdiocese. He served a year as pastoral intern at Christ the King Parish, Milwaukie and served as a deacon at St. Mary Parish, Mount Angel.

Father Rodrigues was born Aug. 13, 1941, in Cavelossim, Goa, India. He attended mission, minor and major seminary in Pilar, Goa, India. He was ordained in 1966 for the archdiocese of Goa, India. He has served throughout Oregon, most recently as pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish since 1998.

Father Rodrigues-Silva is a priest from the Diocese of Tehuantepec in Oaxaca, Mexico. He has done missionary work in Africa. He is serving through an agreement between his Mexican bishop and Archbishop Vlazny.

Father Smith, a member of the Brotherhood of the People of Praise, was born in 1958 in Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. He holds a bachelor's degree of commerce from the University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, and a law degree from the University of Natal Law School. He entered the seminary in 1996. He received a master of arts in theology in 2000 and a master of divinity degree in 2001. His served most recently as parochial vicar at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Lake Oswego.

Father Stead was born May 28, 1930, in Kewanee, Ill. He received a bachelor's degree from Conception Seminary in 1952, where he was ordained in 1956 for the Archdiocese of Portland.

He has served throughout Oregon, most recently as pastor at St. Augustine Parish in Lincoln City since 1993.

Father Waldron was born Jan. 2, 1942, in Castlebar, Ireland. He attended St. Jarlattis College Tuam in Ireland, from 1955 to 1960. He attended seminary at All Hallows College in Dublin. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Portland in 1966.

He has served pastoral assignments all over Oregon, most recently at Holy Trinity Parish in Beaverton since 1991.

He was a member of the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission from 1970 to 1971.

Father Weeks was born in Anaheim, Calif., in 1970. He attended school and community college in Lancaster, Calif. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy in 1999 and a master of arts in theology in 2002 from Mount Angel Seminary, and later a master's of divinity in 2003.

This past year he served as a deacon at St. James Parish in McMinnville.

Father Wood, a member of the Brotherhood of the People of Praise, was born June 15, 1960, in Washington, D.C.

He graduated from St. Anselm's Abbey School in Washington, D.C., and attended the University of Notre Dame. He was ordained in 2000 for the Archdiocese of Portland. He was a parochial vicar at Holy Redeemer Parish in Northeast Portland (2000ñ01) and at Sacred Heart Parish in Southeast Portland (2001ñ02).

He has had an assignment in the Archdiocese of St. Paulñ Minneapolis since 2002.

Father Yurchak was born July 7, 1949, in Sioux Falls, S.D. He received a bachelor's degree from Portland State University in 1971. He attended seminary at Universitaet Innsbruck in Innsbruck, Austria, from 1971 to 1975, where he received a master's in theology. He was ordained for the Archdiocese of Portland in 1976.

He has served throughout Oregon, most recently as pastor at St. Patrick Parish in Canby since 1994.
