3/4/2010 Regarding church annulments

Letter to the Editor
To the Sentinel: Occasional letters to the Sentinel call for the unconditional acceptance of divorced and remarried Catholics to the Eucharist. Pope Benedict was quoted about marriage and annulments in the church: “The church cannot act charitably toward its faithful without upholding justice and truth.” Letters too often portray the Church’s teaching on divorce and remarriage as inhumane and cold. I feel for those Catholics whose marriage broke apart and then found love with another. I implore divorced/remarried Catholics to seek reconciliation with the Church through the annulment process, as I did. If the Church just opened up the Eucharist, as some letter writers suggest, then Catholics would be cheated of learning the truth and difference among divorce, remarriage and a sacramental marriage. This journey has blessed me greatly over the last 20 plus years. Mel Damewood Eugene
