Pro-life activists are continuing their presence on Northeast Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Portland as a large Planned Parenthood building is constructed.

Dozens attended a recent candlelight vigil set on the feast of the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Weekly demonstrations have endured.
Construction is in its 10th month, with the building slated to open in 2010.

On a morning last month, 30 people representing a network of five pro-life groups in Washington and Oregon gathered for a five-hour “Show The Truth” event to give witness to what they described as the horrors of abortion.

The event occurred during work hours and was chosen to get the attention of workers. Pro-life activists from Precious Children of Portland learned that some of the construction crew workers were unaware that they were building an abortion facility.
One worker yelled, “There are no plans for an abortion clinic here!”

“This is typical of Planned Parenthood’s tactics,” says Rita Diller, national director of Stop Planned Parenthood, a partner of American Life League. “They deceive construction workers. You must bring them evidence.”

“Planned Parenthood is afraid the workers would learn what they are building,” Diller said, adding that some construction workers are Christian.

That’s what prompted Christina DeGoede to go into action, calling Show The Truth-Washington and enlisting the organization in an effort to raise awareness.

Show The Truth-Washington members traveled in three vehicles from Olympia, Wash., bringing 18 pro-lifers, mostly Catholic youths. The organization stages regular tours in the Pacific Northwest. Included in this group were members of Students Witnessing Against Abortion Terror, a new pro-life youth group at Holy Rosary Parish in Portland.

Tour members stood peacefully beside 4-foot signs of aborted babies. A second truck with photographs was driven by Darius Hardwick of the Center for Bioethical Reform Northwest, located in Salem.

A Show the Truth truck displayed two large color photographs depicting a baby and a woman with the caption, “Abortion: one killed, one wounded.” The “one wounded” refers to post-abortive women.
