PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad — The Antilles Episcopal Conference has called for international bodies and countries in the Middle East to work toward an extended cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.

In a statement dated Aug. 9 and released Aug. 12, the conference said parties should work toward a "process leading to citizenship for the millions of stateless Palestinians and full economic and social rights, as well as peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians."

The conference, which covers 19 ecclesiastical units, including five archdioceses spread across the English-, French- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean islands, said countries should use their "moral weight" to push for a solution in forums such as the United Nations. It said the world has witnessed "horrendous suffering, especially among children in Gaza/Israel during the last few weeks, as the death toll rises from hundreds to thousands, and the number of wounded and maimed spirals toward 10,000."
