Retired Admiral Watkins dies at 85

Retired Navy Admiral James Watkins, former chief of naval operations, who was chairman of President Ronald Reagan’s AIDS commission and energy secretary for President George H.W. Bush, died of congestive heart failure  at his home in Alexandria, Va. He was 85.

A funeral Mass for Watkins was celebrated at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in Washington, D.C.

Watkins was a Knight of Malta and the father of a priest of the Archdiocese of Washington.
