Ninth Circuit Court Judge Diarmuid O'Scannlain will address the 2011 University of Portland spring commencement, set for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 8 at the sports dome on the North Portland campus. Judge O’Scannlain will receive an honorary doctorate as part of the school’s 110th commencement.

Holy Cross Father William Beauchamp will confer an anticipated 676 bachelor’s degrees. Also participating will be 105 students expected to be awarded bachelor’s degrees at the end of the summer, for a record total of 781 undergraduates.

The university also has 212 graduate degrees to confer.

A member of St. Elizabeth Parish in Southwest Portland, Judge O’Scannlain was deputy attorney general for Oregon, public utility commissioner and director of the state’s Department of Environmental Quality. He returned to private practice in 1974. President Reagan nominated him to the Court of Appeals in 1986. He has served on the President’s Advisory Council at the University of Portland.

The University’s highest honor, the Christus Magister Medal, goes to Lawrence Cunningham, professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, author and essayist. Cunningham has written and edited about 20 books about Catholicism and religion, and was a literary columnist for Commonweal magazine for 10 years. Also receiving honorary doctorates will be:

• Dr. Don V. Romanaggi, class of 1956, a Portland physician and benefactor for whom Romanaggi Hall is named.
• Dennis Keenan, a 1968 graduate, is outgoing executive director of Catholic Charities in Oregon.
• Mother Francine Cardew, a 1967 graduate and, founder and long the head administrator of the Franciscan Montessori Earth School in Portland.
• Miguel Humberto Díaz, U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See and former president of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the United States.
• Carolyn Williams, past president of the American Academy of Nursing.
