MOUNT ANGEL — Bert Bernards, 94, doesn’t know much about iPads. But the former member of St. Paul Parish in St. Paul does like to eat.

That’s why Bernards is getting to like the digital tablets, which show him the full menu at Providence Benedictine Nursing Center here.

Deeply disappointed
As much as I have admired him as a writer, I am deeply disappointed in the current editor’s poor judgment in this matter.

Despite flaws, book has much to offer parishes dealing with diversity
Much of the story of the Catholic Church in the United States can be told by focusing on how immigrant groups have been received by the church — whether well or poorly — and how these groups have changed the church. This story continues today with the continual influx of immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries, Africa, Asia and the Pacific Islands.

The Young Pope

NEW YORK (CNS) — Behind the opening credits of "The Young Pope," a naked baby boy crawls over a sea of infant mannequins, and a man dressed as the Roman pontiff emerges at the other end.

As bizarre as that may sound, the controversial, provocative new miniseries from pay-cable channel HBO only gets stranger from there.

A Marian Year - of sorts
The date was May 13, 1981.  It was an otherwise beautiful spring day in Rome as Pope St. John Paul II made his way by “pope mobile” through the enthusiastic crowd of faithful and well-wishers.  Suddenly, shots rang out and the Holy Father slumped into the arms of aids, seriously wounded by the would-be assassin’s bullets.  I personally remember that day all too well.

Catholic schools offer apprenticeship for sainthood
Catholic schools are a gift to the church. The Third Plenary Council of Baltimore in 1884 mandated that every parish in the United States should have a Catholic school. The bishops of the United States made this decision essentially because they recognized the importance of a mission-driven school system in partnership with parents, the first educators of their children, in protecting, preserving and passing on the faith.

Untold history: Blacks in Oregon Catholic schools

First in a series on race in the Catholic schools. This story is one of two focused on African-Americans

If he missed the bus home from public school, Jerry Peterson could find himself running from a group of white students as they shouted the N-word.

It was the late 1960s and African-American children like the fifth-grade Peterson were being bussed from their predominately black neighborhoods in North and Northeast Portland to all-white schools as part of a much-criticized approach to the desegregation of public schools.
